I like to take old black and white photographs as pieces in colorful paintings.   This is a collage of four different photos - the house, car, motorcycle, and the biplane.  The plane is called a Curtis JN-4 Canuck, painted from a photo by Don Parsons, (permission provided).

Survivor, Researcher

Simon Wiesenthal, the Nazi war criminal hunter.   In an interview someone asked him if he considered himself an Historian (after having written a number of books)... He said no, he's more of a Researcher.  In a speech he asked that people not consider him a Hero.... Rather, he said, every day of his life after WWII he has considered himself just a Survivor who could not let the victims down.  He had to search for justice for the victims.  12 x 12 inches, oil on canvas panel.

Kathe Kollwitz in oil pastels

Kathe Kollwitz (July 8, 1867 – April 22, 1945) was a German painter, printmaker, and sculptor whose work offered an eloquent and often searing account of the human condition, and the tragedy of war, in the first half of the 20th century. Her empathy for the less fortunate, expressed most famously through the graphic means of drawing, etching, lithography, and woodcut, embraced the victims of poverty, hunger, and war. (Wikipedia)

Shackleton and Hurley, 1915

From a photo of Ernest Shackleton, Antarctic explorer, and his photographer, Frank Hurley. They, along with 26 others, were stranded on the ice for about 18 months, trying to survive and get back to civilization.
In the photo, his face clearly carries the burden of getting all his men back alive “Though he was virtually fearless in the physical sense, he suffered an almost pathological dread of losing control of the situation….He felt he had gotten them into this situation and it was his responsibility to get them out.”

Nathan Hale boyhood home

This is where Nathan Hale grew up, in Connecticut.  Acrylic.  This was sold to as an auction item to a group that was raising funds for the upkeep of the Hale home!    One thing that sort of bothers me about this painting...that horse should have had his head down in the grass like most horses do most of the time.
